Innovative Uncompromised Lab Practice During the Pandemic

Prof Raja Kumar got personally involved and saw to it that the Lab courses were organized in usual IIT standards for students even during the pandemic with both components of (i) laboratory hands on with physical presence and (ii) online by live streaming or pre-recorded video of demonstration of experiments. Possibly this was unique to IIT Bhubaneswar.

In the later part, the faculty members conducted the laboratory experiments on the lab table as per the schedule of time table and streamed the same to students. In some cases, the faculty members performed the experiments in advance on the lab table, recorded the same and streamed it online as per the schedule of the time table.

In addition to the above mentioned streaming part, every student was brought to the campus in between the wave and they were provided with normal hands on practice as per (i). Majority were brought to the campus during during Feb – April 2021 after the first wave they had full hands on part of the laboratory practice for both Autumn and Spring semesters of 2020-21 as well as the last few experiments of 2020-21 session that were left due to the first lockdown . Due to the 2nd wave, return of two of the batches to the campus had to be postponed to July 2021 and the full laboratory practice was done. For the 2021-22 session, the students returned to the campus nearly fully by Sept 2021 and they had their lab practice on the campus with their full physical presence.
Despite that it was pandemic time, Prof Raja Kumar personally visited the lab sessions and also monitored the practice to ensure organization in high standards.
