Approval to create a Petaflop Super Computing Facility

IIT Bhubaneswar has been pursuing exhaustive research in a large number of Supercomputing Applications than many institutions. Having realized the extensive computational requirements of the numerous projects such as the following, Prof Raja Kumar personally initiated strong actions for the establishment of a 1.3pf super computer at IIT Bhubaneswar as long back as in 2016 and a strong proposal was put up under Nation Super Computing Mission.:

  • Numerical prediction and simulation of Extreme Weather Events,
  • Extended range Simulation/prediction of precipitation and temperature over India with Regional Climate Models for climate risk management in Agriculture,
  • Coastal Processes Simulation on the Northern Bay of Bengal
  • Atomic Level Modelling and Simulations for Nanostructured Materials,
  • Quasi‐static approximation in MHD flows and heat transfer,
  • Compressible flows,
  • First‐principles studies in ferric materials,
  • Energy Management Systems for Smart‐grid infrastructure,
  • 3-dimensional CFD modelling and simulation,
  • Multi-scale modelling of laser based additive manufacturing of multicomponent alloys,
  • Simulation of a 3-dimensional phase change heat transfer,
  • Simulation of a 3-dimensional Thermal Management of Battery Module
  • Soil-structure-interaction: analysis of design of geotechnical systems.

The sanction of a peta flop machine was put in pipeline and the committee once again recommended establishment of a machine in 2021. All physical facilities including space provision in SEOCS building were all ear-marked too.
