These days when you put a question about career option to a youngster passing his/her higher secondary and seeking admission into the higher education system, we get a routine answer like, BTech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), in all probability. When you ask why and what is done CSE, in majority of the cases, you wouldn’t get a satisfactory answer. The complexity of today’s life including the inappropriate competitive environment, changed family systems, may be responsible for majority of them to lack clarity on the directions to take in their life in general and careers and social relationships in particular. The situation clearly indicates that the ambitions in life and career are hype based and not based on an organic evolution on the true likings and not ambitions in life and career.
The typical and monotonic narrow, hyped-up career objectives of the students and their parents alike may be attributed to the prevailing competition for admissions, unhealthy preparations for entrance tests, lopsided choices of fields giving over-emphasis to pay packages which themselves are defined by very short-term fluctuations in the job markets, hype based technology projections and a fraction of the media joining this race by their immature projections for popularity ratings. It is extremely difficult for a youngster to have an organically developed choices in the above-mentioned lopsided scenario, particularly when the education system itself doesn’t provide holistic learning and all-round development. It would be unfortunate, if majority of the system itself joins the fray for commercial gains cashing on the prevailing situation.
I personally feel that in the process, our future generations will be facing a raw deal from the society, it is painful, it will be causing a very serious national loss and hurting the prosperity. Also, it is not at all desirable for the society to remain insensitive and does n’t address this very important ailment.
Naturally, a sensitive citizen sharing these thoughts and feeling the associated pain and playing the role of a teacher is expected to take up the responsibility to fix the matters in an appropriate and feasible way. As per my experience, as one tries to address these issues during ones teaching career, the administrative assignments come very handy empowering one giving a great opportunity to do it at institutional level and beyond. To share my personal experience, my assignments at IIT Kharagpur, RGUKT and IIT Bhubaneswar during the last two and half decades gave me a tremendous opportunity to seriously engaged in addressing these issues. To cite, the efforts did yield extremely gratifying results at least within my jurisdiction. It is very pleasant to find NEP-2020 too addressing a number of these issues.
Some major ones of these issues are briefly touched upon, here. Also, some of the implementations that could be done exceptionally at IIT Bhubaneswar and RGUKT are described in another sub-section of the present section and the RGUKT section, respectively.
Examination Centric Training for Entrance Tests – A Serious Ailment: Typically, coaching practices for entrance tests for admissions into higher education programmes are tuned towards examination success and deviate very significantly from serving the objectives of education. It may not be out of place to mention that a fraction of these agencies appear to believe that training of students via the route of good education is a long-drawn process and they resort to adopt short-cut mechanisms which amount to rote learning and grinding culture. As a result, majority of those students who take admission into premier institutions are apparently burnt out by some of the tasteless and meaningless blind exercise and come out with lost interest in education.
The Student Activities are for All: Typically, institutions and universities are found to promote sports activity confining it to serve the objective of winning a medal in the inter institutional competitions or beyond. In the true sense the medals tally can be a measure of the sports skills of university only when these are earned by an organic way. Otherwise, it will amount to the ability of a university in training and fielding a few teams. Though This argument may sound utopian, it is the reality going by the broader objective behind the holding of competitions. Therefore, the responsibility of an institution doesn’t end with giving a deterministic and regular sports practice for a team or two with expensive coaching. Sports are for the benefit of all students and all deserve to get the same. Similar is the case with socio-cultural events too.
Sports, socio-cultural activities, kinship with fellow students through personal interactions etc., are very essential to maintain excellent mental and physical health of the campsites. These activities also go a long way in reducing the stress levels and help in preventing suicides on a campus.
The Puzzles in Social and Career Options - Virtues of the Indian Way of Life and Value System: The Indian way of life emphasizes value for education (both formal and informal), family ties and unity and characteristics such as respect for elders, honesty, and hard work. Traditionally, the practices of our education system have been designed to foster these values which have many virtues and found a special place in the world. These virtues are global and though not emphasized at comparable levels, the other societies too value these at varied levels.
Apart from the above, despite the threats posed to such a culture by the rapid changes in the world, our country has so far been able to stick to certain core values like universal brotherhood and peaceful coexistence which have been responsible for maintaining the unity in diversity, social order and harmony. Furthermore, India has a rich tradition of music, dance, literature and art which have been time tested for thousands of years due to their inherent strengths and are well respected across the globe.
Due to the socio-demographic changes and disparities in economies and opportunities across the nations in the world and the associated attractions playing a dominant role, amongst a majority of the youth, there is a certain monotonic rush to pursue a path of imitation of the western ways for directions and goals (both career and sociocultural), rather than allowing these to take diverse paths based on own organic choices. In view of this some of these tome-tested value systems promoted and practiced by India are found to be taking a backseat with a good fraction of students.
Nature is diverse. Globally, a civilized society respects and protects diversity. Therefore, it is valuable and desirable to promote different cultures across the globe. Ideally, the youth should have the freedom to choose their way of life developed organically based on own interests with a free mind. Organic growth in a way may take place through the associated learnings, by taking inspirations, assessing opportunities, developing tastes, interests and identifying own interests, identifying strengths and developing goals based on these with consciousness and by pursuing the same.
There is a concern that the grinding type of coaching or preparation for entrance tests for admissions in institutes of higher education is seriously affecting and possibly burying the organic growth in forming goals, directions and other personality aspects. A student may be left to settle to other options like, (i) a model as advised (mostly misguided) by a senior. One serious difficulty in this is that it is possible that the senior himself/herself might have strayed away from the mainstream and at times may be inappropriate (such seniors are found to have a higher level of visibility and accessibility than their other counterparts, to their juniors) to advise a junior or (ii) the carefree and fast youth culture with associated lifestyles of the west and lands of opportunity and attractions therein, or (iii) adopt the synthetic sociocultural models portrayed and projected by the commercial cinema and its icons (it is known that the objectives of the commercial cinema industry and their marketing strategies, etc., are significantly different from social values) or (iv) the variants and mix of these, or (v) a model that lacks a direction and objectivity, which itself emerged as a class under a misplaced concept of modernism and perused en-masse through a path of imitation. Needless to mention that it will result into conflicts in personality attributes advocated by the society and career interests, lack of diversity and loss of direction and it is not desirable.
It is the responsibility of our society to give them a chance to grow organically. Furthermore, in view of its virtues, they be allowed to understand the virtues of the own time-tested Indian system before they decide and carve out their future directions. Here it may be necessary to caution there exists a typical immature shrugging off of the some of the Indian practices under the faulty labelling of ‘old fashioned system’ by a section of our society, I personally believe that these are very important requisites which have a very high and fresh relevance in the present times. The globe that values diversity would certainly encourage sustenance of cultures such as the Indian culture.
If the higher education system ignores its responsibility towards personality development that too in an organic way, I am afraid there is no other system that can take care of it and the implications would be very negative causing a tremendous loss to our society. Therefore, the higher education system, which particularly runs the undergraduate education should rise to take up this responsibility despite the challenges it poses, on this front too (it is needless to mention that ignoring this responsibility is very easy and convenient).
Need for Intermittent Detachment from the Keyboards/screens of Digital Devices: It is known that, these days, students irrespective of seniority level are found to be over attached to keyboards/screens in the process of excessive surfing of internet and engaging to social media which have many ill effects including development of behavioural disorders. That is, as the percentage of students getting affected is rising, certainly the detoxification from the usage of digital means at least for some time every day is becoming a requirement, placing some responsibility on the institutes.
It is therefore becoming essential for institutions to incorporate cultural mechanisms by design to see that the students are brought out. This may be effectively done by engaging the students with physical activity like sports and social activity wherein they are engaged with people wilfully, in addition to the classroom and laboratory engagement as a part of academics. This will also help them engage in meeting and talking to people and experience the virtues of meaningful relationships with peers in person rather than by virtual means and develop interpersonal relationships and skills rather than confining the social interactions to only digital messages.
Some Essentials in Designing and Shaping a Campus Culture: The fore-mentioned issues need to be given due consideration and addressed while designing (in a new institute like IITBBS) or shaping (in a senior institute) the student culture of an institute, since these are going out of proportion and causing a lot of value loss in the system, at the moment. Student suicides is another serious issue which needs to be addressed. There is a need for controlling the excess stress levels and preventing the associated system complexities from pushing suicidal tendencies beyond the limits
These apart, the need for emphasizing human values during education as a part of character building and scope for personality development too are essential ingredients.
Actually, the campus life of students was started at IITBBS campus from July 2015. Being conscious about the present cultural scenario, Prof Raja Kumar personally took several important and conscious pre-designed measures to see that a healthy (physical and mental), constructive and vibrant student life that would shape in to very responsible proactive individuals, is developed and maintained at the institute. Traditional time-tested Indian concepts like character building. cultural enrichment and personality development have been given importance to prevail and the good practices such as ‘early to bed and early to rise’ a chance by choice. With night hanging out and the tendency of adopting western lifestyle becoming default characteristics of student culture predominantly despite their drawbacks, everywhere, it needed a strong courage to attempt implementing the relevant characteristics of traditional models. The administration did not hesitate to even take some measures which may be like a bitter pill on the surface of it and may carry the associated risk of being not liked by students in the first instance. But by proper design, prior appraisal to students and the diligence that was exercised in its sincere implementation have resulted in to wide acceptance. yielded very remarkable results and the campus grew to proudly project its unique signature character very exceptionally, by the time Prof Kumar relinquished the position of Director in April 2022. The model deserves a special consideration in the modern times that pose a lot complexities and threats to students.
The important ones of the signature characteristics that was pre-planned, designed, and implemented successfully yielding beneficial and positive results are described here, as follows:
In short, the biggest achievement of all of the above mentioned very responsible and challenging actions taken is that the IITBBS campus is a wellness and extremely responsible and vibrant campus, and it is an unparalleled signature in the country.
