Laboratory facilities available to our Research Group include the following latest state-of-the-art equipment located in the FMS and Computer Integrated Manufacturing Laboratory and the Mechanical Micro-machining Laboratory : • a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS), • a Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) System, • an ultra-precision 5 axis CNC Micro-machining Centre (Make: Kern Microtechnik, Germany), • a CNC milling machine with Automatic Tool Changer (Make: Intelitek Israel), • a CNC milling machine with Automatic Tool Changer (Make: MTAB), • a slant bed CNC Lathe with 8 station programmable turret (Make: MTAB), • a 5-axis articulated Robot (Make: Intelitek Israel), • a 6-axis articulated Robot (Make: MTAB), • a 6-axis articulated industrial Robot (Make: Yasakawa Motoman), • a pneumatically actuated loading/unloading arm (Make: MTAB), • an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) (Make: MTAB), • an Automated Storage / Retrieval System (AS/RS) (Make: MTAB), • a Machine Vision system for automated inspection (Make: Intelitek Israel), • a PLC controlled Modular Manufacturing Automation System, etc. • an optical camera system for inspection of micro-tools (Make: Kern Microtechnik, Germany) as well as various software packages such as, • CAD modeling software (SolidWorks, CATIA), • Software for CAD/CAM based Part Programming (CAMWorks, SpectraCAM, SpectraCAD Engraver), • CNC Programming Software for Lathe and Milling Machine (CNCtrain, CNCBase), • Image Processing Software (Matrox Inspector), • Simulation and Control Software of Robot manipulators (Scorbase, RoboCell), • Simulation and Control Software of FMS (CIMSIM V2.1), • Simulation and Control Software of Computer Integrated Manufacturing System (CIM) (OpenCIM V4.6), etc. The FMS comprises of a CNC Lathe that is automatically loaded from a conveyor by a loading/unloading arm, a CNC milling machine that is automatically loaded from a conveyor by a 6-axis Robot, an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) for transporting the parts, and an Automated Storage / Retrieval System (AS/RS), all integrated together and controlled by an FMS software, CIMSIM. The CIM system consists of a a CNC milling machine, a machine vision based quality control station, an automatic assembly station and a 5-axis Robot for performing material handling operations and assembly, all integrated together and controlled by an FMS/CIM software, OpenCIM. A unique feature of this system is that it allows users to monitor the operations of the CIM system in real time from remote locations via the internet. This system has been developed by our research group as part of an ongoing research project on Development of a Remote Laboratory for Computer Integrated Manufacturing System that is sponsored by MHRD.
